On June 6, 2020, the Ugandan government expressed its discontent with the mandatory use of the Naivasha Dry Port for cargo destined to the landlocked country.

Uganda's Minister of Works and Transport, Edward Katumba-Wamala, stated that the port should be optional, emphasizing the need for improvements at the Nairobi Inland Container Depot (ICD).

According to Katumba-Wamala, the ICD still requires some improvements to make it more attractive to shippers. He also reaffirmed the importance of addressing the findings of the technical team that visited the ICD.

Ugandan industrialist Alykhan Karmali, managing director of Mukwano Industries, urged the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) to rescind the decision, citing a breach of the contractual agreement.

Kenya had stated that the Naivasha port would enhance cargo storage for the region.
