Nairobi, June 5, 2020 - The COVID-19 pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges to the education sector, with schools closed since mid-March. In a press conference, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha handed over the final report on guidelines for reopening schools to the Education Cabinet Secretary.

Although the report's contents were not disclosed, Magoha emphasized that decisions regarding school reopenings will be based on data and evidence from the Ministry of Health. He urged parents, guardians, and caregivers to take charge of their children's safety during this pandemic period.

Magoha expressed concern over the rising cases of teenage pregnancy, sex, and drug abuse, and genital mutilation among children. He called on parents to change their mindset and prioritize their children's well-being, stating that love is measured by the time spent with children, not by the amount of money given.

Online lessons provided by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development will continue until schools reopen. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations had previously warned against cybercrime activities targeting young children.
