On June 5, 2020, the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) announced a grant to support journalists in telling impactful stories about COVID-19, which could help Kenya better its chances of beating the pandemic.

The grant, which is open to accredited journalists, aims to provide funding for communication, travel, meals, and virtual mentorship, with a limit of Ksh1,000 to Ksh25,000 per applicant.

Applicants will be required to present a health story idea, propose sources, and outline the unique angle of their story in not more than 150 words. They will also need to provide proof of an editor committing to run the story.

The council will hold an awards ceremony to determine the winning story categories, which will be based on the uniqueness and strength of the story and its impact on the public.

The deadline for application is June 15, 2020, at midnight, and grantees are expected to publish their stories by July 15, 2020.

According to the MCK, the COVID-19 pandemic has increased demand for information on health policies, budgeting, staffing, facilities, and overall preparedness for disease outbreaks in Kenya.

As of June 5, 2020, Kenya's Coronavirus cases stood at 2,474, with 79 deaths and 643 recoveries.
