On June 5, 2020, the Anti-Counterfeit Authority, in partnership with the Multi-agency enforcement team, made a major breakthrough in the fight against counterfeit goods in Kenya. The team destroyed a large assortment of counterfeit items worth Sh27 million in Athi River.

The seized goods included fast-moving consumer products such as clothing, footwear, alcohol, electrical goods, and apparel, which were replicas of popular local and international brands.

According to Elema Halake, Executive Director of the Anti-Counterfeit Authority, the destruction of the counterfeit goods is a critical step in the country's continuous effort to combat counterfeiting.

'This is a significant milestone for the Authority,' said Halake. 'Through a thorough exercise that took place over a long period of time, we were able to work closely with other enforcement teams and nab these goods. Counterfeit products are not fit for human consumption.'

Halake noted that the initiative contributes to the National Action Plan against counterfeiting and illicit trade in the country.

'This initiative also marks the beginning of celebrating the World Anti-Counterfeit Day that the world celebrates during the first week of June every year,' concluded Halake.

Betty Maina, Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Cooperatives, emphasized the government's commitment to fighting illicit trade and counterfeit products.

'As Government, we are on a daily basis fighting the war on illicit trade and counterfeit products as it has a big hit in genuine economic activity, contributes to reduced essential tax revenue, impacts on foreign direct investment prospects and contributes to serious health risks,' Maina noted.
