On May 31, 2020, Ford Kenya party leader Moses Wetangula accused party rebels of scheming an unsuccessful coup against the party's leadership, leading to the suspension of secretary-general Eseli Simiyu and MP Wafula Wamunyinyi.
However, the Registrar of Political Parties, Anne Nderitu, has now nullified the decision, stating that the party's parliamentary group (PG) and National Executive Council (NEC) that suspended the duo were not properly convened and lacked a quorum.
Ms. Nderitu also revealed that the party leadership failed to tender the statutory form PP7 to her office, which is required to inform the registrar of changes in the party's officials.
As a result, Senator Wetangula will have to call for another NEC and PG meeting to ratify the changes before submitting them to the Registrar of Political Parties again.
Senator Wetangula has maintained that he is still in control of the party, while the Simiyu's team claims that the registrar only asked them to rectify a minor anomaly in the PP7 form.
Ms. Nderitu's ruling has been met with mixed reactions, with some party members calling for Wetangula's ouster and others defending the party leader.
Ms. Nderitu's full statement reads:
"You are kindly guided to address the issue highlighted above within the precincts of your party constitution and in line with section 20 of PPA and apprise us on the same,"
she said.
