On June 5, 2020, Taita Taveta Governor Granton Samboja took decisive action against corruption in his county, interdicting 15 revenue collection clerks and law enforcement officers accused of embezzlement and forgery of receipt books.
According to Finance and Planning Executive Andrew Kubo, the affected officials had already received interdiction letters and would know their fate in the next seven days.
The officials, attached to the county offices in Taveta and Mwatate sub-counties, were accused of using fake receipt books to collect revenue from clients, including truck drivers plying the Voi-Mwatate-Taveta highway.
Mr. Kubo revealed that one of the interdicted officials had been pocketing Sh30,000 per day, amounting to Sh900,000 per month.
He assured that the county administration had hired qualified investigators to probe the matter and that the officials would be dismissed and charged with forgery.
Mr. Kubo also announced plans to reshuffle all revenue department officials to dismantle corruption cartels in the finance department.
As of March 31, the county had collected over Sh163.7 million in revenue, which had since increased to over Sh215 million.
