On June 3, 2020, Amazon announced plans to lease 12 Boeing 767 jets from Air Transport Services Group (ATSG) to bolster its air cargo fleet.
The leased jets will bring Amazon's air cargo fleet to 82 aircraft, with one of the planes already joining operations in May 2020. The remaining 11 jets are expected to be delivered in 2021.
As part of its expansion plans, Amazon is set to open regional air hubs at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas, the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in Puerto Rico, and the Lakeland Linder International Airport in Florida later this year. A new hub will also be opened at the San Bernardino International Airport in 2021, in addition to its central hub at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.
Amazon's growing air cargo network aims to support its own business and potentially rival major carriers such as FedEx, United Parcel Service, and Deutsche Post DHL.
