Kenya is bracing for heavy rains from June 5 to 9, 2020, with the Kenya Meteorological Department warning of potential flooding and landslides in several areas.
According to a forecast by the weatherman, moderate rainfall is expected in the highlands west of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin region, northwestern parts of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, and the Coastal region from June 5 to 9.
However, the rains are expected to intensify from June 7 to June 9, with over 20mm of rainfall in 24 hours.
Director of Meteorological Services Stella Aura has called for measures to be put in place to avoid loss of life and property during the expected landslides and flooding.
Residents living along major river basins in the affected areas are advised to be on the lookout for rising river and dam levels, while those in landslide-prone areas are urged to be cautious of cracks in the ground.
Motorists are also advised to avoid driving through flooded areas, and people are warned against walking in moving water or open fields.
Additionally, fishermen and the maritime industry are advised to be on high alert due to the potential for rough seas along the coast.
Area(s) of Concern include Trans Nzoia, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, Vihiga, Kakamega, Bungoma, Busia, Migori, Homa Bay, Kisumu, Siaya, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Nyamira, Kisii, Bomet, West Pokot, Samburu, Turkana, Nairobi, Nyeri, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Murang’a, Kwale, Kilifi, Mombasa, and Lamu.
