On June 4, 2020, the Anti-Counterfeit Authority, in collaboration with the Multi-agency enforcement team, destroyed counterfeit goods worth Sh27 million in Athi River.
The seized goods included a wide range of items, such as clothing, footwear, alcohol, electrical goods, and apparel, which were replicas of popular local and international brands.
According to Elema Halake, Executive Director of the Anti-Counterfeit Authority, this operation is a critical step in the ongoing effort to combat counterfeit products in the country.
“This is a significant milestone for the Authority. Through a thorough exercise that took place over a long period of time, we were able to work closely with other enforcement teams and nab these goods. Counterfeit products are not fit for human consumption. Today’s initiative goes a long way to contribute to the National Action Plan against counterfeiting and illicit trade in the country,” noted Elema Halake.
The operation also marked the beginning of the Anti-Counterfeit Authority’s celebration of World Anti-Counterfeit Day, which is observed during the first week of June every year.
Speaking on the matter, Betty Maina, Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Cooperatives, emphasized the government’s commitment to fighting illicit trade and counterfeit products, which have a significant impact on the economy and pose serious health risks.
