The COVID-19 pandemic has brought the Kenya Premier League (KPL) to a standstill, but the Governing Council remains optimistic about resuming the league soon.
According to a statement by the KPL, the council plans to convene a meeting next week to discuss the resumption of the league, pending government directives.
The meeting will be held after the government announces new measures to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, following the lapse of the 21-day nationwide curfew and cessation of movements in certain counties and local administrative areas.
The KPL Governing Council has been in consultation with the chairman, and a provisional agenda for the meeting will be circulated.
The council has also clarified that it does not recognize FKF President Nick Mwendwa's move to declare Gor Mahia 2019/2020 league champions, thereby ending the league.
On April 30, Mwendwa congratulated Gor Mahia and stated that they would represent the country in the CAF Champions League next season, citing Section 2.6 of the FKF constitution which governs failure to complete the league.
The KPL has advised clubs to acquaint themselves with the new FIFA guidelines on how to deal with the effects of COVID-19 on football.
June 4, 2020, marks a crucial date for the KPL as the government is expected to announce new measures to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
