On April 9, 2020, a tragic incident occurred at White House, Tena Estate area within Kamukunji in Nairobi County, where Susan Njeri Wachiuri, 25, allegedly stabbed her boyfriend, Kelvin Njenga Ng'ang'a, 11 times using a knife.
Ms. Wachiuri has since denied committing the offence, but Justice James Wakiaga of the Nairobi court has denied her bail application, citing concerns about her living arrangements.
According to Justice Wakiaga, there was no evidence that Ms. Wachiuri has an alternative means of abode rather than the house of the deceased, where the offense was committed.
"In the absence of documentary evidence that the accused has an alternative means of abode rather than the house of the deceased where the offense was committed, I am at this stage persuaded that it will be risky to release the accused on bond," said Justice Wakiaga.
Ms. Wachiuri had argued that she had a family who were very supportive and willing to accommodate her, but the prosecution opposed her release on bail, citing a rise in gender-based violence amongst couples and the need to deny bail in the interest of public order and security to act as a deterrence.
