On June 3, 2020, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Nairobi made a significant bust, arresting two suspects who were ferrying counterfeit cigarettes worth Sh6 million.
The operation, which was carried out at Salgaa Area along the Eldoret-Nakuru highway, saw the detectives intercept a lorry registration number KCC 226V, which was carrying 80 boxes of uncustomed cigarettes.
"Acting on intelligence, the detectives laid an ambush at Salgaa Area where they intercepted a lorry registration number KCC 226V," the DCI said in a statement.
According to the police, the driver of the lorry, Joseph King'ori Mikamati, was arrested along with the owner of the vehicle. The police also revealed that they are in pursuit of two more lorries that are believed to have been loaded with more counterfeit cigarettes in Busia.
