On June 4, 2020, the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) management announced plans to resume the 2019/20 season, defying Football Kenya Federation's (FKF) order to end the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

FKF President Nick Mwendwa had declared the season over in May, declaring Gor Mahia KPL champions. However, KPL insists they are the body mandated to run the league and therefore any decision touching on the league should be made by them.

According to a statement by KPL, the league management body has been working on plans to resume the season, citing the recent confirmation by Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Amb. Amina Mohamed, that the Government has set up a team to prepare for the resumption of sporting activities in the country once the COVID-19 situation has been managed.

The KPL Governing Council will convene next week to deliberate on the Government's blueprint to reopening the economy and its effect on football activities. The council will discuss and decide on the fate of the KPL 2019/20 season, with the provisional agenda for the meeting to be circulated when convening the meeting.

World football governing body Fifa has recently released a roadmap on how ideally footballing activities should resume in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, and KPL has circulated the same to all clubs urging them to familiarise with the suggestions.

Part of the recommendations by Fifa include medical considerations as advised by the World Health Organisation (WHO), ensuring social distancing as teams travel for matches, and other safety measures.
