Covid-19: Home Care for Asymptomatic Patients

On June 4, 2020, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe announced plans to implement home-based care for asymptomatic Covid-19 patients in Kenya.

According to Kagwe, hospitals are overwhelmed with cases, and 80% of patients are asymptomatic, making home care a viable option.

Isolation facilities are full, and patients will be discharged to recuperate at home, provided they meet World Health Organisation (WHO) protocols.

WHO guidelines require a safe and dignified environment with adequate ventilation, a dedicated toilet, hand hygiene, and washing facilities.

However, in informal settlements and overcrowded settings, mitigation measures will be implemented to ensure compliance.

The government aims to issue protocols and rely on citizens' discipline to adhere to home-based care.

But critics question the practicality of this strategy, particularly in poor neighborhoods with inadequate living conditions.

As of June 4, 2020, Kenya had recorded 2,340 Covid-19 cases, with 124 new cases reported, bringing the national tally to 2,340.

Elgeyo Marakwet became the latest county to record a positive case, with 36 counties now affected by the outbreak.
