Formula One's rescheduled 2020 season is set to kick off in Austria on July 5, with the first eight races announced. The season's restart comes after the Australian Grand Prix was cancelled in March due to a positive case.
According to F1 boss Chase Carey, a race will not be cancelled even if a driver or team member tests positive for coronavirus. Speaking to the F1 website, Carey stated, "We will have a procedure in place that finding an infection will not lead to a cancellation."
He added, "If a driver has an infection, (teams have) reserve drivers available." This approach echoes previous statements made by Jean Todt, the president of the FIA, and the FIA's chief medical officer Professor Gerard Saillant.
Formula One's decision to proceed with the season restart has been met with some concern, but Carey's comments suggest that the sport is taking steps to mitigate the risks associated with the pandemic.
