On June 3, the Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Educational Institutions and Hospital Workers (KUDHEIHA) forced a meeting with Fairmont management to discuss the payment of 50 percent of salary payments for the month of May.
During the meeting, the union disputed the sacking of all employees, terming the exercise as forced and contrary to provisions of an existing Collective Bargain Agreement (CBA).
Earlier, the government had directed the management of Fairmont Hotel and Resorts to justify its decision to sack all employees of its Norfolk and Mara Safari Club establishments.
On May 29, the Solicitor General Kennedy Ogeto wrote a letter to Fairmont management, requesting clarification regarding the media reports and complaints from employees.
On May 28, Fairmont management had cited the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic as the reason for the mass retrenchment and closure of Fairmont The Norfolk and Fairmont Mara Safari Club.
However, following pressure from the government and staff union, Fairmont management has withdrawn the memo that fired all its employees.
