On March 13, 2020, the Kenyan government first reported cases of COVID-19 in the country, prompting the Ministry of Health to outline measures to contain the rapid spread of the disease.
These measures included wearing facemasks at all times while in a public place, washing hands with soap and water or using an alcohol-based sanitiser, and social distancing.
President Uhuru Kenyatta also announced a nationwide dusk-to-dawn curfew and restriction of movement in Nairobi and four other counties to stop human interactions at night and prevent the spread of the disease to other counties.
Bars and eateries were closed, with eateries allowed to reopen under strict adherence to social distancing rules. However, bars and entertainment joints, including Lang'ata's 1824, remained closed.
On June 4, 2020, a video of revellers enjoying themselves at 1824 without adhering to social distancing rules was shared widely on social media, prompting the club to close for renovations.
