As France slowly emerges from its eight-week lockdown, book lovers are flocking to stores to stock up on their favorite reads. According to a recent survey, book sales in France have skyrocketed by over 230% in just one week, with many French bookshops reporting a surge in business.

Although overall sales are still 60% down compared to the same period in 2019, the French publishing industry is breathing a sigh of relief. The country's independent bookshops, protected by a fixed price system, have been particularly resilient in the face of online competition from giants like Amazon.

However, the industry has not been immune to the economic impact of the pandemic. Publishers have reported a staggering 80% drop in revenues, highlighting the need for government support. In response, Culture Minister Franck Riester has announced plans to introduce an aid package for the industry.
