As the world marks five years since the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Kenya still grapples with significant challenges, particularly in extreme poverty, inequality, and climate change. The SDGs Readiness study, conducted by the Kenya Association of Manufacturers, Global Compact Network Kenya, and the Office of the Deputy President, highlights the need for an enabling legal, institutional, and policy framework to achieve the goals by 2030.

The report, titled 'SDGs Readiness report: A Policy, Legislative and Institutional Review of the 17 SDGs in Kenya,' identifies gaps in laws and policies across the 17 goals, emphasizing the importance of green economic growth and recommending interventions. It also reviews institutional arrangements for executing SDG commitments and makes recommendations on how the parliament should monitor national and sub-national execution of SDG commitments.

Ms. Phyllis Wakiaga, UN Global Compact Network Local Chapter Board Chair and KAM Chief Executive, notes that bold action from businesses and leaders is required to deliver the SDGs. 'Every individual effort from large and small businesses alike will count in helping realize our collective goal,' she says. 'The SDG Action Manager is available to all companies to self-assess, benchmark, and improve their sustainability performance aligned with the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact and the Global Goals.'

The SDGs cover a wide range of issues, from leaving no one behind to building peaceful and effective institutions. They are action-oriented, global, and universally applicable, taking into account different national realities, capacities, and levels of development.
