The Kenyan government has announced that it will present the 2020/2021 budget statement on June 11 at the National Assembly Chambers.

According to the announcement, National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani will read the statement at 3.00 pm on that day.

The budget presentation comes at a critical time when the country is battling the COVID-19 pandemic, which has infected over 1,100 Kenyans and left many jobless.

As part of measures to cushion Kenyans from the pandemic, the government has received billions of shillings in loan from international lenders to fill in the deficit occasioned by the pandemic.

Recently, the World Bank announced that it will be lending Kenya Sh4.6 billion to fight desert locusts that have invaded several counties and threatened food security for about three million people.

Additionally, the World Bank will lend Kenya Sh106.8 billion for budget support.

"Without immediate intervention, the locust attack could lead to a deterioration in food security towards the end of 2020 and possible rise in food prices," said World Bank Country Director for Kenya, Felipe Jaramillo.
