Ice cream is a beloved treat, especially during warm weather. However, many of us consume it without much thought, unaware of the optimal way to enjoy it.

According to Dr. Sarah Kemp, a sensory scientist, the key to unlocking the full flavor and texture of ice cream lies in a simple yet effective technique.

Dr. Kemp, who collaborated with low-calorie ice cream brand Oppo Brothers, has developed a formula to create a sensory experience and maximize flavor. While the formula may seem complex, it can be simplified into seven easy-to-follow steps.

Here's how to enjoy ice cream like a scientist:

  • Leave the ice cream at room temperature for 15 minutes to reach -14°C. This will allow the aroma molecules to release.
  • Using a teaspoon, scoop out a small amount of ice cream, about half of the spoon.
  • Place the teaspoon upside down into your mouth, allowing the ice cream to touch your tongue first.
  • Move the ice cream around your mouth, taking note of the cold sensation and creamy texture.
  • Inhale through your mouth to reach all your receptors.
  • Keep the ice cream in your mouth for 12 seconds to experience maximum flavor.
  • Repeat with every bite to build up the full ice cream taste profile and sensation.

Dr. Kemp emphasizes the importance of flavor and encourages people to prioritize getting the most out of every mouthful, especially when it comes to ice cream.

"Flavor is extremely important, and getting the most out of every mouthful should be your number one priority, especially when it comes to ice cream," Dr. Kemp said.

"When tasting ice cream, turning the spoon upside down as it enters your mouth ensures the ice cream touches your taste buds first, giving you a stronger flavor impact, almost instantly," she added.
