On May 25, 2020, the Kenyan coffee market experienced a significant price surge ahead of the Nairobi Coffee Exchange's one-month break.
The average price of a 50-kilo bag of coffee rose to Sh19,292, a 66% increase from the previous trading price of Sh11,554.
Nairobi Coffee Exchange chief executive Daniel Mbithi attributed the price hike to a surge in demand and high-quality coffee during the auction.
"We got a sizeable number of lots with good quality, which spiked the prices at the auction in this week's sale," said Mbithi.
The price increase marked the highest jump recorded since the beginning of the year, as buyers sought to purchase more stocks for future use during the auction break.
