On Saturday, May 23, 2020, detectives from the Special Crime Prevention Unit in Nairobi made a significant arrest in the fight against counterfeit goods.
Samuel Mwangi Kariuki, 35, was apprehended along Park Road in Parklands while ferrying suspected counterfeit liquor bottle tops in his Toyota Fielder (registration number KBS 275C).
Upon searching the vehicle, the detectives recovered 2000 pieces of Kibao Spirit bottle tops and 1000 pieces of Patiala Spirit bottle tops.
Further investigation led the police to Kariuki's store at Civil Servant Estate within Ngara, where they recovered additional counterfeit liquor bottle tops, including Napoleon Gold spirit, Konyagi spirit, and Kenya Cane spirit.
The police also seized two rolls of fake Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) stickers, four rolls of tape with London distillers Mark, and a roll of Mau Mist natural spring water label.
Kariuki is set to face charges of manufacturing and distributing alcoholic drinks without a valid liquor license, contrary to section 36(1)a of the Nairobi City Alcoholic Drink control and Licensing Act, 2014.
