On Saturday, forces loyal to the UN-backed Libyan government announced a significant victory, taking control of three military camps in the southern part of the capital city, Tripoli.
According to Mohamed Gonono, spokesman for the UN-backed government's forces, the camps of Al-Yarmuk, Hamza, and Missiles were seized from the rival eastern-based army, led by Commander Khalifa Haftar.
"Our forces took control of Al-Yarmuk, Hamza and the Missiles camps and are pursuing the fleeing militias of Khalifa Haftar," Gonono stated.
As the conflict between the two rivals continues, the UN-backed government's forces have been making steady progress, taking over military camps and cities in western Libya.
Since April 2019, a war has been raging between the UN-backed government and the eastern-based army, which seeks to capture Tripoli and topple the UN-backed government, despite repeated international calls for a ceasefire.
Unfortunately, the fighting has resulted in the deaths and injuries of hundreds of civilians, with over 150,000 others displaced.
"The military engineering teams are clearing mines laid by Haftar's militia," Gonono added, highlighting the ongoing risks faced by civilians in the conflict zone.
