Published on May 24, 2020, in a move that has been hailed as a significant step towards a more inclusive administration, Turkana County Governor Josephat Nanok has made new appointments, promoting women to key positions in governance.

Phoebe Kaaman has been appointed as Advisor on Partnership, Gender and Children’s Affairs, while Elizabeth Limagur will serve as Director for Governor’s press service. Rebecca Lowoya has been appointed as Advisor on Political and Intergovernmental Relations.

These appointments come on the heels of other women leaders being appointed to key positions, including Jane Ajele, the County Executive Committee (CEC) member for Health. Women in the county have expressed confidence in the performance of their female folk, urging others to break the proverbial glass ceiling.

“Under her stewardship, Ms Ajele has influenced speedy construction and equipping of health centers in once-forgotten, far-flung villages in Kainuk, Kapedo and Lomelo regions. More women now deliver in hospitals,” said Bethsheba Ekale, a Lodwar town resident.

Other women in senior positions include Jennifer Nawoi Long’or (County Lands Executive) and Trade, Gender and Youth Affairs’ Esther Lokiyo Lokwei. Turkana Women Rep Joyce Emanikor commended Nanok for empowering women, urging women in leadership to inject new energies and vigour to achieve outstanding performance.
