On May 24, 2020, Kenyans were treated to a dose of good news as two of their own were elevated to key international positions in the United Nations system. The appointments of Dr. Patrick Amoth and Ms. Sanda Ojiambo have given Kenyans a much-needed respite from the gloom of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has infected over 1,000 people and claimed over 50 lives in the country.

Dr. Amoth, the acting director-general of Health, has been elected as the vice-chairperson of the executive board of the World Health Organisation. His appointment is a testament to his expertise and dedication to public health, and he is expected to make a significant contribution to the global fight against COVID-19.

Ms. Ojiambo, a Safaricom executive, has been appointed as the new executive director of the UN Global Compact agency. She will assume her new role on June 17, bringing with her 20 years of experience in civil society and private sector engagement. Her appointment is a significant recognition of her skills and expertise in promoting sustainable development goals.

While Dr. Amoth's appointment is a welcome development, it is disappointing that he remains an acting director-general in Kenya's Health ministry. However, this appointment is a reminder that Kenyans have the capacity, knowledge, and expertise to serve among the best in the world.
