On May 23, 2020, Kenya's Ministry of Health reported 31 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total to 1192. President Uhuru Kenyatta announced the update during a press conference at the State House.
According to the president, Kenya has tested 57,650 samples since the outbreak. He emphasized the need for the country to return to normal, hinting that the curfew and lockdown may be lifted soon.
President Kenyatta stated that his government was monitoring the pandemic's progress in other countries, where movement and stay-at-home orders have been implemented. He noted that Kenya cannot continue with the current restrictions, citing the need for economic activity to resume.
During the press conference, the president hinted that the nationwide dusk-to-dawn curfew, which was set to end on June 6, may not be extended. The cessation of movement in Nairobi, Kilifi, and Mombasa, also set to end on June 6, may also be lifted.
President Kenyatta emphasized the importance of individual responsibility in preventing the spread of the virus, saying, "If you don’t observe the guidelines, you will harm other. You must be responsible to protect your workmates."
The current timeline for the curfew and movement restrictions is set to end on June 6, 2020.
