On May 22, 2020, South Sudan reported a significant increase in Covid-19 cases, bringing the total to 563.

According to Dr. Makur Koriom, the spokesman of the High-Level Committee on Covid-19, the 82 new cases were identified through contact tracing and alerts in Juba.

Dr. Koriom explained that out of 168 test results, 82 were confirmed positive, while 62 returned negative. The remaining 24 samples were inconclusive and will be retested in 72 hours.

The breakdown of the confirmed cases shows that 58 were male and 24 were female. The cases were categorized as follows: 38 were contacts, 13 were alerts in Juba, 11 were suspects, and 20 were among samples collected randomly within Juba and those traveling to states.

As a precautionary measure, the task force recommended that all individuals wear a face mask while in public to prevent further spread of Covid-19.
