On May 23, 2020, a 23-year-old Kenyan woman shared her distressing experience on Reddit's Relationship Advice forum, revealing that she had been living with her white boyfriend's parents in Canada during the lockdown.

According to her post, she overheard her boyfriend's parents making racist remarks about her when they thought she was asleep. The comments were made in the presence of her boyfriend, who had been together with her for a year.

She recalled overhearing his mother say, 'As long as he doesn't marry her, it's fine. And he won't, he knows we would be disappointed.' His father also made a racist comment, saying, 'it's a shame she's a n though.'

The woman was left feeling lost and unsure of how to react, having never dealt with racism before. Many users on the forum offered her comfort and advice, but some were divided on whether she should end the relationship due to her boyfriend's parents' comments.
