As Kenya continues to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic, the government has announced that it will present the 2020/2021 budget on June 11 at the National Assembly Chambers.
The budget, which will be read by National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani at 3:00 pm, comes at a time when the country is facing significant economic challenges due to the pandemic.
Kenya has received billions of shillings in loans from international lenders, including the World Bank, to help cushion the economic impact of the pandemic.
Just this week, the World Bank announced that it will be lending Kenya an additional Sh4.6 billion to fight the desert locust invasion, which has threatened food security for over three million people.
“Without immediate intervention, the locust attack could lead to a deterioration in food security towards the end of 2020 and possible rise in food prices,” said World Bank Country Director for Kenya, Felipe Jaramillo.
