Kenya's rugby community is in shock following the tragic loss of Allan Makaka, a former Kenya 7s international player, who died in a road accident along Mombasa Road on Saturday morning.
According to eyewitnesses, Makaka's vehicle collided with a stationary lorry near Airtel Headquarters, resulting in his immediate death.
"I received the news at around 2 AM and everyone is still in shock. He was a jovial and very kind-hearted person and it is sad that he is gone," a source within the rugby circles said.
Makaka, 38, had a storied career in rugby, featuring for Ulinzi from 2000 to 2004 and winning the National Sevens Circuit in 2002 and 2003. He later joined Kenya Harlequins, winning the Kenya Cup with the club in 2008.
He was also a part of the Kenya Sevens squad to the 2005 Rugby World Cup Sevens in Hong Kong and the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, earning 57 appearances for the team and ranking 142 points.
Outside of rugby, Makaka worked as the Business Manager for Royal Media Services, overseeing Hot96. He leaves behind a wife and two children.
