On May 23, 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced an 8-point stimulus package worth Sh53.7 billion to revive the economy battered by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The package includes measures to cushion the youth from the effects of the pandemic, with the government planning to spend Sh10 billion to employ over 200,000 youth under the National Hygiene Programme.
According to the President, the programme will focus on key sectors such as infrastructure, education, health, agriculture, and tourism, as well as the SMEs sub-sector, environment, and manufacturing.
President Kenyatta also revealed that the government is spending Sh250 million every week to support vulnerable groups in the country who have been worst hit by the impact of the pandemic.
Additionally, the government has set aside Sh2 billion to support the renovation of facilities and the restructuring of business operations in the tourism industry, which has been severely affected by the pandemic.
Hotels in tourism destinations across the country remain closed since March when the country confirmed its first case of coronavirus.
