Kenya's COVID-19 cases have risen to 1,192, with 31 new cases announced by President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday, May 23, 2020.

Since March, when the first case was confirmed, the government has conducted 57,650 tests, with the Ministry of Health projecting Kenya's COVID-19 peak to be in August or September, with at least 200 cases daily.

President Kenyatta addressed the nation from State House, announcing a massive Sh53.7 billion stimulus package to revive the economy, which has been slowed down by the pandemic since March.

“Coronavirus pandemic has and will continue to undermine our efforts to revitalize our economy for the unforeseeable future,” he said.

The stimulus package focuses on key sectors, including infrastructure, education, health, agriculture, and tourism, with other sectors such as SMEs, environment, and manufacturing also benefiting.

President Kenyatta also revealed that the government is spending Sh250 million every week to support vulnerable groups in the country who have been worst hit by the impact of coronavirus.

Additionally, Sh1 billion has been set aside for flood control measures, and Sh850 million for the rehabilitation of wells, water pans, and underground tanks in the Arid and Semi-Arid areas.
