On May 23, 2020, youth in Mandera County, Kenya, called on the government to expand the Kazi Mtaani program, which was launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta to help vulnerable youths who lost jobs following the Covid-19 pandemic.
Beneficiaries of the program, such as Mohammed Ali, praised its effectiveness in keeping them busy and helping them meet their basic financial obligations through daily wages.
Adan Abdi, another beneficiary, requested that the government extend the 20-day exercise until the Covid-19 pandemic is subdued, allowing them to return to their normal economic activities.
The youths in the program are engaged in various activities, including bush clearing, unblocking drainages and sewer lines, fumigating public places, and general cleanliness, all aimed at fighting the spread of Covid-19.
Mandera County Commissioner Onesmus Kyatha urged the youths to take the initiative seriously and perform their tasks responsibly.
