Dr. Patrick Amoth Elected as WHO Executive Board Vice President

On May 22, 2020, Dr. Patrick Amoth, the Director of Health at Kenya's Ministry of Health, was elected as the Vice President of the World Health Organization's (WHO) Executive Board, representing the Africa region.

Dr. Amoth, a medical doctor with a Master of Medicine (MMed) degree in Obstetrics/Gynaecology from the University of Nairobi, will serve a two-year term alongside four other Vice Presidents. He expressed his gratitude on Twitter, saying, “I am overwhelmed & deeply grateful for your support & kind words on my election as Vice President of @WHO Executive Board. My sincere gratitude also to @MOH_Kenya led by CS Mutahi Kagwe, for their confidence in me. I will endeavor to represent Kenya with dignity & honor. Asante!,”

Dr. Amoth has been instrumental in Kenya's fight against the coronavirus, which has infected over 1,100 people. He previously served as chief medical specialist (obstetrics/gynaecology)/ senior deputy director of medical services at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital in Nairobi.

The WHO Executive Board is responsible for determining the budget, programs, and activities of the World Health Assembly. It is composed of 34 members, each designated by a Member State that has been elected to serve by the World Health Assembly.
