On June 11, National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani will read the 2020/2021 budget statement at the National Assembly Chambers, marking a significant moment in Kenya's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
As the country grapples with the economic impact of the pandemic, which has infected over 1,100 Kenyans, the budget statement is expected to outline measures to cushion citizens from the effects of the crisis.
Kenya has received billions of shillings in loan from international lenders, including a recent announcement by the World Bank of a Sh4.6 billion loan to combat the desert locust invasion, which has threatened food security for over three million people.
“Without immediate intervention, the locust attack could lead to a deterioration in food security towards the end of 2020 and possible rise in food prices,” said World Bank Country Director for Kenya, Felipe Jaramillo.
