On May 22, 2020, the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced the appointment of Sanda Ojiambo, a Kenyan executive, as the next executive director of the UN's Global Compact.
Ojiambo, the lastborn daughter of veteran politician Julia Ojiambo, will take over from Lise Kingo, a Danish national, on June 17, 2020, when the agency will be marking its 20th anniversary.
As the head of Sustainable Business and Social Impact at Safaricom since 2010, Ojiambo has brought significant experience to the role, having worked in civil society before joining the telecommunications company in 2008.
During her tenure at Safaricom, the company signed up with the UN Global Compact, resulting in the release of sustainable business reports.
Ojiambo will lead an agency with over 10,000 companies signed up from 160 countries, and her appointment is seen as a significant milestone in the agency's efforts to mobilize the private sector in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
