On May 22, 2020, the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) announced its search for a new director-general, nine months after Francis Wangusi's exit in August 2019.
Francis Wangusi had been the CA's director-general since 2012, but his tenure was marked by leadership wrangles, which led to his forced exit in early 2018. However, he was later reinstated after the leadership disputes were resolved.
Following Wangusi's exit, Director of Legal services Mercy Wanjau took over as the agency's acting boss. However, her tenure was also challenged in court by activist Okiya Omtatah and the Consumers Federation of Kenya (Cofek), who contested the leadership changes.
The High Court later barred the CA board from replacing Wangusi, citing that it was not properly constituted to effect the changes. The CA has now invited new candidates, including those who had previously applied for the post, to reapply for the position. The application deadline is June 9, 2020.
