On May 22, 2020, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe praised Machakos County for its low COVID-19 cases, crediting the county's success to the efforts of Governor Alfred Mutua and the residents.

According to CS Kagwe, Machakos' low cases are not a coincidence, but rather a result of the collective efforts of the county government and its people.

CS Kagwe made the remarks in a video interview, where he expressed his gratitude to Governor Mutua and the people of Machakos for their hard work in containing the spread of the virus.
