On Friday, May 22, 2020, Kenya's Covid-19 cases reached 1161, following the confirmation of 52 new cases.

Of these, 23 were reported in Nairobi, while 7 cases were recorded in Busia. Meanwhile, 5 patients were discharged from hospitals.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe announced the new figure during a tour of Machakos County, where he emphasized the need for vigilance in containing the spread of the coronavirus.

Busia, being a border town, has become a hotspot for the virus, with long-distance truck drivers contributing to the spread. Kagwe assured that the Ministry of Health would take all necessary measures to support the county government in containing the outbreak.

He urged drivers to get tested before traveling, especially from high-risk areas like Mombasa. In Nairobi, Kagwe expressed concern over the rising cases in Kibera, which has 8 new cases, and hinted at stricter containment measures.

So far, 11,000 health workers have been trained, and 5,000 community support workers have been recruited to support them. Kagwe attributed the low numbers of Covid-19 cases in counties to the restrictions on movement.

However, he cautioned that counties like Machakos are not entirely safe and urged residents to maintain hygiene levels, social distance, and wear masks.
