On May 22, 2020, a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Airbus A320 crashed in a residential area of Karachi, leaving a trail of destruction and chaos.

According to Abdul Sattar Khokhar, the spokesman for the country's aviation authority, the plane was carrying 99 passengers and 8 crew members when it crashed.

Images aired on national television showed the plane had smashed into a residential area, with thick black smoke billowing from the site.

The crash comes just days after Pakistan began allowing commercial flights to resume after planes were grounded during a lockdown over the coronavirus pandemic.

PIA has a chequered safety record, with frequent plane and helicopter crashes over the years, including a 2016 incident in which a plane burst into flames after one of its engines failed.

The airline has also faced numerous controversies, including the jailing of a drunk pilot in Britain in 2013.
