On May 13, 2020, a suspect named Martin Wasike, who had been charged with kidnapping a police officer, went missing from police custody at the Kamukunji Police Station in Nairobi.
Investigations into the escape led to the arrest of three police officers, Corporal Vacity Kimeres and Constables Stephen Auko and Elias Koome, who were on duty at the time of the escape.
The three officers were arraigned at Milimani Law Courts and denied the charges of aiding the escape of a suspect from police custody.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the three suspects were each released on a bond of Ksh. 200,000 with one surety of the same amount or an alternative of Ksh. 50,000 cash bail.
The court heard that the officers had helped Wasike, a Ugandan national, to escape from lawful custody on May 13, 2020.
Wasike has been charged with kidnapping Constable Abel Misati, who has been declared missing since January 11.
The case will be heard on June 4, and the three police officers will be required to report to the Divisional Criminal Investigations Officer (DCIO) Kamukunji every Thursday.
