As schools remain closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Rift Valley Regional Commissioner George Natembeya has issued a stern warning to chiefs in his jurisdiction: they will be held accountable if any school girl gets pregnant.

Speaking in the Rift Valley, Natembeya emphasized that it is the chiefs' responsibility to know what is happening in their areas and to take action to prevent teenage pregnancies.

“If a girl gets pregnant in your area, I will know that the pregnancy is yours, and we will do a DNA test to confirm it. Before the child is born, you will be the one to take them to the clinic,” Natembeya said, drawing laughter from the congregation.

With schools closed, teenagers are at home, increasing the risk of getting pregnant. Natembeya warned men against luring teenage girls, stating that anyone found responsible for teenage pregnancies will be arrested and charged.

“We will catch you, even if you try to escape to Tanzania or anywhere else. We will bring you back, and you will face the law,” Natembeya warned.

He also cautioned women against taking their daughters through Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), a practice that is outlawed in Kenya.

“We will not tolerate this practice. Women who subject their daughters to FGM will be held accountable,” Natembeya added.

As the police boss, Natembeya has consistently raised concerns about protecting teenage girls and ensuring they do not drop out of school.
