Published on May 22, 2020, the Kenyan Health Ministry reported 80 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total to 1,109.

Seven of these new cases were mourners who had traveled from Kibera slum in Nairobi, despite having obtained a permit illegally to attend a burial in Siaya.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe expressed regret over Kenyans taking the coronavirus situation lightly, saying, "This war cannot be fought by the government alone, it will be won by individuals in the streets, markets, densely populated areas who ensure they are protected and protect others."

Kenya has implemented a dusk to dawn curfew and a cessation of movement in and out of Eastleigh estate in Nairobi and Old Town area of Mombasa.
