On May 22, 2020, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) signed a contract with the China Road and Bridge Corporation to construct a Sh. 1.5 billion floating bridge in Likoni, Mombasa.
The bridge, set to be completed within six months, will stretch 660 meters from north to south of Likoni and include a pedestrian bridge, pile foundations, and a Bailey-type approach bridge with a movable main steel bridge.
According to the Chinese firm, the project has taken into account aspects of timeliness, economy, reliability, and practicality.
The Likoni channel ferries an estimated 300,000 passengers and over 6,000 cars daily, making the bridge a much-needed relief for residents and a solution to the heavy traffic that dominates the Likoni crossing channel.
