On May 22, 2020, the Senate is set to decide the fate of Deputy Speaker Kindiki Kithure in a special sitting. The move comes after Majority Whip Irungu Kang'ata filed a notice of motion on Tuesday, as the purge against Senators perceived to be allies of Deputy President William Ruto continues.
Kindiki is the latest to face ouster, following the removal of Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen and Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika as Majority Leader and Majority Whip respectively. Kang'ata, who replaced Kihika, has been mobilizing support for Kindiki's removal, stating that the Jubilee party has lost confidence in him and that party members must vote in line with the party position.
However, the Njuri Ncheke Meru Council of Elders has strongly condemned the intended removal of Kindiki, describing it as intimidation. The elders, led by National Chairman Linus Kathera and National Organizing Secretary Josphat Murangiri, called on President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene and stabilize the Jubilee Party, which they said has disintegrated due to personal and petty wars among elected leaders.
