On a day meant for love, a Chinese woman, surnamed Zhao, unleashed a pungent revenge on her ex-boyfriend in eastern China's Shandong province.

According to Shandong Net, a news outlet affiliated to the local government, Zhao ordered a tonne of onions online and had them delivered to her former boyfriend's house on Chinese Valentine's Day.

"I cried for three days, and now it's your turn!" she wrote in a note alongside the stinging gift, as reported by Shandong Net on Sunday.

Zhao had been in a relationship with her ex-boyfriend for nearly a year before he decided to break up with her unilaterally, causing her significant emotional pain.

"Money is nothing. But the feelings between two people are precious. I can't be the only one crying," she added.

The breakup has raised a big stink in the entire neighbourhood, with one resident complaining of the strong stench of rotting onions.
