On May 21, 2020, Jubilee Party warned that it will not tolerate acts of indiscipline by its members. Senate majority whip Irungu Kang'ata stated that some members have been disrespecting the President and will be dealt with.
According to Kang'ata, the party's members have publicly contradicted the President, abused him, and shown no respect. He emphasized that it is his duty to ensure that they are punished.
However, a group of Jubilee renegade MPs, led by Kimani Ngunjiri, have accused the party leadership of using State agencies to harass and intimidate them. They claimed that there is an elaborate plan to arrest them using fabricated charges by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), and the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).
The MPs, who include Nelson Koech, Victor Munyaka, Didmus Barasa, and Kimani Ichung'wah, have reported credible threats to their lives to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations yet nothing was done by way of meaningful investigation.
They also claimed that there are plans to eliminate certain MPs in retaliation and as a warning to others over their political views. An elite squad was recently disbanded by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations after details of plans to harm political leaders leaked out.
Speaking at Parliament buildings, Kang'ata stated that the party will continue to punish those who go against the party constitution and the Political Parties' Act. He emphasized that he is under instructions from the party members to enforce party discipline.
However, Jubilee Party Secretary-General Raphael Tuju told the MPs to stop diverting the attention but report their claims to the relevant government agencies.
