On May 21, 2020, Atletico Madrid announced that their defender Sime Vrsaljko had undergone a successful operation to remove surgical material from his knee.
According to the club, the 28-year-old right-back had the arthroscopy procedure in Madrid to remove the material left in his left knee from a ligament operation 16 months prior.
Although Vrsaljko missed almost all of the 2018-2019 season due to injury, he played a crucial role in Croatia's run to the 2018 World Cup final.
