As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to affect communities across Kenya, a group of police officers in Kayole have been making headlines for their selfless efforts to help those in need.
Led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Hellen Mideva, the officers have been fetching water for residents and carrying it to their homes, a gesture that has won them the hearts of many.
The initiative, which began in response to the pandemic, has seen the officers carry 20-litre jerrycans from a borehole in the estate to individual houses, providing much-needed relief to those affected by the crisis.
According to Ms Mideva, the officers decided to take action after realizing that many residents were struggling to access basic necessities like water. "We decided to take matters into our own hands and help those in need," she said.
The officers' efforts have been particularly crucial in Kayole, where residents have been surviving without water due to damaged water transmission pipes. The situation was exacerbated by the suspension of operations at the Sasumua dam following a landslide at the Aberdare forest caused by heavy rainfall.
As a result, 11.6 percent of city estates and commercial centres in Nairobi have been experiencing water shortages indefinitely, according to the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company.
